Tile on the Walk of Fame for Duncan Laurence

Singer and songwriter Duncan Laurence has been awarded a tile in Tilburg's Walk of Fame. Mayor Weterings symbolically handed the tile to Duncan on Thursday, Feb. 29, after his sold-out concert at Poppodium013. With the place in the Walk of Fame, the city honors this artist, who has a special connection to Tilburg because of his education at the Rock academy.

Duncan Laurence

Duncan Laurence studied at the Rock Academy at Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg from 2013 to 2017. There he developed as a singer, songwriter and producer, gaining experience during his studies in London and Stockholm, among other places. Since the age of 13, Duncan Laurence has been writing his own lyrics, including for his band The Slick and Suited, as well as for other artists. The Slick and Suited formed at the Rock academy in Tilburg in January 2013, and the band performed at festival Eurosonic Noorderslag. Duncan competed in the fifth season of the RTL 4 program The Voice of Holland in 2014. He reached the semifinals.

On May 18, 2019, Duncan Laurence won the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv with the song Arcade, which he wrote and composed himself. It was the first time since 1975 that the Netherlands won again. Duncan became the fifth Dutch winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. His debut album Small Town Boy was released in 2020 and his second album 'Skyboy' was released last September.

Recently Duncan told in an interview that he has a special bond with Tilburg, because during his student days Tilburg offered him a safe haven where he could develop and be himself. Because of that, Tilburg still feels like his city. Mayor Weterings during the presentation: "With this statement you conjured a color on our Tilburg cheeks. We were already proud of you, but you made us even prouder with these words."

Walk of Fame

The Walk of Fame was created in 2009 during the celebration of Tilburg's 200th anniversary. In the period since then, a committee has been formed that annually advises the college on a person to be inducted who is of special significance to Tilburg. This must be talent born, raised, educated or living in Tilburg with national or international charisma and fame. This may be in the field of sports, art and culture, music, science or politics. In each tile the name of the person is engraved. Tiles have previously been laid for the likes of Guus Meeuwis, Roy Donders, Corry Konings and Kenny B. Duncan Laurence's tile will be laid in mid-April in the Walk of Fame, which is located on the Spoorlaan in Tilburg.

With this tile, Duncan Laurence has also left his mark of his musical journey in Tilburg, from Rock Academy student to Eurovision superstar.
