Comedy Wildlife-foto's in Naturemuseum Brabant

A grumpy turtle with an upset day, a happy fish and a smiling squirrel: the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards are back!

This year there is even a Dutch entry: The Inside Joke by Femke van Willigen. And all winning photos, more than forty, will come to Tilburg again! Very welcome now that we all need a little extra humor. A little more patience: from Friday 30 October, three days after the winners have been announced, they can be seen in Natuurmuseum Brabant. And that is worth it, because in real life and all together they are even more fun than online! The winner is Mark Fitzpatrick with a picture of the turtle raising his "middle finger".

Winners of the General and Audience Award: a grumpy turtle and "O sole mio!" Overall winner was Mark Fitzpatrick with a brilliant photo of a turtle that is clearly fed up and is showing his “middle finger”. And the winning public photo sings a victory song: O sole mio, by Roland Kranitz. There were six more winners in other categories (Creatures of the sea, land, air, Junior) and ten “Highly recommended”.

Recognizability & humor: perfect combination

Three years ago, Natuurmuseum Brabant was able to bring the exhibition exclusively to the Netherlands. With success, both in the museum and on social media. The situations and facial expressions of the animals, in combination with the photo captions, are very recognizable and sometimes irresistibly funny. This combination turns out to work very well: nature can be that much fun! The winners were announced online this year. The exhibition opens a few days later in the museum, this year in a separate room on the first floor. The photos come into their own even better and in addition, the display cases show animals that have a (direct or indirect) link with the photos. There is a lion, a gentoo penguin, a mantled baboon and, of course, a squirrel. Even more reason to come to Tilburg!

Conservation through competition The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards initiative was created by Tom Sullam and Paul Joynson-Hicks. These photographers, who live / work (partly) in Tanzania, often (unintentionally!) Printed exactly at the right time and then saw the comical facial expressions of animals in the photos, or they turned out to have captured funny situations. The pair saw an opportunity to draw attention to the conservation of nature in a positive and playful way. They decided to use humor in a competition that is now being organized for the fifth time. The photos are shared worldwide on social media, and those from previous years are still popular.

Born Free and Nature around the corner With the photo competition, Comedy Awards supports the organization Born Free, which is committed to animal protection and welfare. With the competition they draw attention to wild animals and the preservation of their habitat. And with the sale of the photos, money is raised for the Born Free Foundation. With the remainder of the proceeds, the museum wants to contribute to the Natuur om de Hoek project, a project that allows children from Tilburg to (re) discover nature in and around their immediate environment.

The exhibition can be seen from October 30, 2020 to May 9, 2021 in Natuurmuseum Brabant.
