Recycled Chandelier

The world's largest recycled chandelier now shines in the World Building of the Year, the LocHal. The 32 m2 Chandelier Ø13 with 169 (13x13) lamps is made of 10,000 recycled PET bottles.

The message is that by looking and acting differently, you can turn something very negative (litter) into something super cool. In other words, the ugly duckling in the street becomes a beautiful swan in the sky.

The reveal
Twelve children and adults, all involved in a different way in this initiative, lit the light in the KroonluchterØ13 by pressing a button. After two and a half years of preparation, this is the starting signal for the exhibition to be held in the World Building of the Year, the LocHal, until 31 December. The ambitions then extend further. To go on tour with the chandelier, as a symbol of the circular future, to proclaim the message from Tilburg to Milan to New York.

Unique craft process
During the entire process, more than 2,000 people have contributed. It starts with the people who collected the PET bottles (for deposit time) and handed them in, i.e. 'local mining'. Subsequently, these bottles were manually cleaned by removing labels, caps and rinsing them. During various events and activities, these bottles were shredded by the use of a bicycle. These shreds were weighed out and combined in the desired colour composition. Then melted down in an oven to a sphere, which after a manual finishing process is made into a lamp.

How it started 2.5 years ago
In 2019 it was announced that there would be a deposit on small plastic bottles from 1 July 2021, that's when the idea for the KroonluchterØ13 arised. Not waiting 2 years, but taking immediate action to get the PET bottles out of the streets. Together with the local Plus store in Tilburg, they started the 'PetSave' campaign. People could hand in their PET bottles for a €0,05 discount, in order to make the streets cleaner. The dream was to make a chandelier out of these 100% recycled PET bottles, and to hang it up in the most prominent place in Tilburg.
